R&D Mechanical Engineering Intern - Thorlabs

Bergamo III Multiphoton Microscope

At Thorlabs, I worked as a Mechanical Engineering intern on the R&D team in the imaging systems division, a business unit specializing in microscopy solutions for biomedical applications.

As part of the R&D team, I created a line of cage adapter brackets used for advanced laser applications. With Thorlabs' in-house manufacturing facilities, I was able to see and contribute to the full product development process from initial ideation to commercial launch.

I also created the company's first full SolidWorks assembly of the Bergamo III, the company's flagship multiphoton microscope. The assembly contained over 3000 parts and was fully integrated into the company's product lifecycle management (PLM) software, meaning that changes to any of the parts would automatically be reflected in the full assembly.

Finally, I designed aluminum Jigs for Thorlabs' cooled cameras, improving manufacturing speed by reducing the number of required fixtures. I manufactured the parts using a Tormach CNC machine, allowing me to gain hands-on experience in CNC programming while reinforcing my understanding of design-for-manufacturing (DFM) principles.
